The tracking kit

Two devices, hidden apart on your bike. Where they go, and what arrives in the box.

How do we hide trackers?

  • We change the designs

We're constantly updating our casing designs and how we fit them. There's no pattern for thieves to spot.

  • We don't publish our designs

The casings shown below are fake. We don't show our real casings on purpose, so there's nothing for thieves to learn.

  • We hide two trackers

A GPS tracker and a close-range beacon in separate spots. Even if one gets found, we can recover with the other.

How tracking works

Our tracker kit, the tracker already on your bike, or both. Whichever you have, it's our team who uses it to find your bike after a theft.

Using our tracking kit

Our kit is two devices, hidden apart on your bike. They aren't there for you to watch. They're there so our team can find your bike after a theft.

Sleeper GPS

Works out where your bike is in two ways. GPS satellites give the most precise fix. It's sharpest outdoors and less precise indoors, but still useful. Cell triangulation is the backup: it measures its distance to nearby mobile masts to get us within a few hundred metres. It sends its position to our team over the mobile network, and its battery lasts years. When it runs low, we send you a fresh one.

  • Cell triangulation
  • Mobile network

Close-range beacon

A small Bluetooth beacon that gives off a short-range signal. It doesn't need satellites or a mobile signal, so it keeps working inside buildings. Once the Sleeper has us within a few hundred metres, our agents use scanners that pick up the beacon. They follow the signal as it gets stronger, right to the building, shed or van your bike is in. Its battery lasts years too.

Why two?

Each one can lead us to your bike on its own. Together, they give our team two independent ways to find it.

Can I see where my bike is?

Not with this kit. There's no app: it's a theft-recovery tool that only our team uses. Our own app is planned for 2027.

Why not live tracking?

Live tracking needs a big battery or wiring into your bike. Ours are small enough to hide and run for years with nothing to charge.

Already have a tracker?

Keep it. Lots of members run their own tracker with our kit on top. More devices on your bike means more ways for our team to find it.

Using your own tracker

Already have a tracker on your bike? Our Theft Recovery Subscription works with it. Keep using its app as normal. We only need it after a theft.

  3. Stolen? Share it with us

Report the theft and share the tracker's location. Our team takes it from there.

How we get bikes back

What happens after a theft: our team goes and gets your bike back, with Backup Insurance as a second safety net if you add it.

How do we recover stolen bikes?

We've recovered over 1,000 stolen bikes and encountered every situation imaginable.

Here's one of them. A Tern cargo bike stolen in London and recovered just over two hours after its owner reported it.

24/7 response

The theft was reported to us at 6am. It was stolen about two hours before from an on-street cycle hangar in Hackney, London.

This Tern cargo bike was taken from a locked hangar at 3:48am. The owner reported it just before 6am, and within the hour an agent was on the way.

In-house data analysis

Our platform reads every signal from your tracker, and our expert team analyses it: where the bike is, and when to move.

The tracker had recorded the theft itself. Its last clear signal came at 4:41am, inside a gated development by the canal. The bigger circles show where it stopped for a few minutes before that.

Planning the recovery

Our office team digs into where the bike is most likely hidden, then plans the recovery strategy for the agent on the ground.

We checked the last signal on Street View. The bike could be in a courtyard behind the gates, or hidden on the canal side of the fence. So the agent left with a plan, and a backup plan.

Agent is close by and detects the bike

Long-range scanning equipment and automatic detection networks give our agents the tools to hunt down your bike.

Our app scans for the bike's beacon as the agent moves. At 8:00am, Bilal's phone picked it up, a short walk from the tracker's last signal. At that point we were 99% sure we'd get the bike back.

Our agents execute the recovery

Whether it's on a property or locked up, our specialised recovery teams know how to get your bike back, whatever the situation.

Bilal found it on some cycle racks, unlocked, with the saddle pulled out and left with the bike. It was couriered back to its owner the same day.

How BackPedal with insurance works

FAQs

  • What does BackPedal do?

We get stolen bikes back. Hidden trackers lead our recovery team, working across mainland UK, to your bike, and our agents go and get it. We've recovered over 1,000 bikes, with a recovery rate above 80%, most within about 48 hours.

  • What are the three plans?

Recovery only uses the tracker already on your bike. Tracker + Recovery adds our hidden tracker kit. Tracker + Recovery + Insurance adds backup theft insurance from Sundays on top.

  • Is BackPedal insurance?

Recovery only and Tracker + Recovery are a recovery service, not insurance: we get your bike back, but its value isn't insured. Only Tracker + Recovery + Insurance includes theft insurance, provided by Sundays.

  • How do I fit it?

It takes about 5 minutes, with every tool in the box. Your fitting guide shows where each casing goes on your bike. There's nothing to activate.

  • What happens after I report it?

Our in-house team follows your bike's trackers, then our recovery agents go and get it. Most bikes are back within about 48 hours.

  • Does a recovery cost extra?

No. There are no call-out fees and no excess for a recovery: it's part of your plan.

  • What is the Recovery Promise?

Best case, we bring your bike home. Worst case, your kit and recovery subscription cost you nothing. If your bike is stolen while your cover is active and we can't recover it, we refund your kit and every recovery subscription payment you've made. Insurance premiums aren't refunded, but on the insurance plan you can claim your bike's value from Sundays, subject to policy terms. One refund per bike.

  • How much does it cost?

Recovery only is £5.99 a month, with nothing to pay up front. Tracker + Recovery is £89 for the kit, then £5.99 a month. Tracker + Recovery + Insurance is the £89 kit, then a monthly price based on your bike's value.

  • Can I cancel?

Yes, any time. On the kit plans, send the kit back within 30 days of us posting it for a full refund, and we cover the return postage. After that, a monthly plan stops at the end of that month, and a yearly or 3-year plan refunds the months you haven't used. The kit is yours to keep.
